Election workers, also known as "election inspectors," or "poll workers," staff the polling place on Election Day. Election duties include:

  • Setting up the polling place
  • Preserving order
  • Registering electors
  • Recording Voter numbers
  • Issuing ballots,
  • Monitoring voting equipment
  • Counting votes
  • Properly completing required forms

High School Election Worker

State law permits certain qualified high school and home-based private educational program students to work at the polls as an election inspector on Election Day. Wis. Stat. § 7.30(2)(am).

Qualifications

  • Must be enrolled in a public, private, or tribal high school or a home-based private educational program
  • Have written authorization from the student's parent or guardian
  • Have written authorization from principal or program administrator of the school if the student has less than a 3.0 grade point average

Restrictions

  • A student may only serve as an inspector at a polling place if at least one inspector, other than the chief inspector, is a qualified elector of the municipality
  • A student may not serve as chief inspector at a polling place
  • A student serving as an election inspector may not challenge any person offering to vote.
  • Students may serve only at polling places that serve their residence.

Training

High school students are required to be trained by the municipal clerk prior to the election.

Election Worker Training

All election workers are required to receive training from the municipal clerk prior to working an election event. The City of Wausau typically offers training:

  • Refresher training one week prior to each election
  • In person an online training opportunities
  • In-depth training for new hires
  • Poll worker guide created specifically for City of Wausau elections
