Yes, the City of Wausau requires dogs and cats older than 4 months be licensed. Proof of rabies vaccination is required at the time of licensing. There is a $8.00 discount offered when licensing pets that are microchipped; proof of microchipping applies. The license can be obtained in a variety of ways:

All pet licenses run January 1 through December 31.  Licensing fees are as follows:

• Neutered/Spayed dog or cat $20
• Unneutered/Unspayed dog or cat $62
• If your pet is microchipped apply an $8.00 discount, proof required.

Note: A late fee of $5 is imposed if the license is obtained after March 31.  Additionally, failure to license may result in issuance of a municipal citation and penalty assessed.

The city municipal code limits ownership to no more than two dogs and/or three cats over the age of four months in or upon one residential unit, unless you hold and are approved for a Pet Fancier permit. Apply for Pet Fancier permit.

The city municipal code limits ownership to no more than four domestic animals which includes rabbits, gerbils, hamsters, guinea pigs, rats or other similar pets in any one residence.

Raising or owning, wasps, hornets, poisonous snakes, farm animals, wolves or any animal raised for fur-bearing purposes are not allowed.

Yes, dogs on leashes are permitted in City Parks. In addition off-leash park times are:

6:00 am - 9:00 am

Pets are not allowed in the 400 Block during special events.
