The Department of Public Works & Utilities consists of six divisions: Engineering, Street Construction and Maintenance, Inspections & Zoning, GIS (Geographic Information Systems), Parking, and Wausau Waterworks.


The Department of Public Works & Utilities is responsible for all of the city owned infrastructure within the road right-of-way throughout the City of Wausau. Major facilities include streets, sidewalks, storm sewer, wastewater treatment plant, water treatment plant, sanitary sewer pipe and manholes, water pipe, fire hydrants and water storage tanks. The Department is responsible for maintenance of all of these facilities that residents and visitors use every day. There are over 100 employees within the Department. The Department has an average operating annual budget of approximately $19.9 million.
