Street Construction Projects
Street construction projects include the installation of concrete curb, gutter and drive approaches; bituminous concrete (asphalt) pavement; storm sewer where necessary; replacement and/or installation of water and sewer laterals where necessary; replacement of existing defective sidewalk; and possible installation of new sidewalk if it does not currently exist.
The following streets are scheduled for reconstruction in 2024:
- Eau Claire Boulevard from Grand Avenue to the west termini
- Emerson Street from Eau Claire Boulevard to Kent Street
- Mount View Boulevard from Eau Claire Boulevard to Kent Street
- Pied Piper Lane from Eau Claire Boulevard to Kent Street
- Short Street from North 1st Street to North 3rd Street
- Stewart Avenue from 48th Avenue to 72nd Avenue

72nd Avenue (Packer Dr. to International Dr.) - Bicycle and Pedestrian Trail

Stewart Avenue (72nd Ave. to 48th Ave.) - Complete Reconstruction
Construction Anticipated 2024
The City of Wausau in cooperation with WisDOT propose to reconstruct Stewart Avenue. Improvements proposed include:
- Reconstruction with 12-foot travel lanes/6-foot shoulders (36-foot roadway)
- Paved shoulders would accommodate bicycles within the roadway
- Construction of a multi-use trail along the north side of Stewart Avenue
- Construction of curb and gutter and storm sewer
- Some roadside ditches may be maintained for stormwater treatment
- A stormwater pond will be constructed near 48th Avenue to treat stormwater
- Reconstruction and extension of sanitary sewer and watermain
- Replacement of traffic signals at 72nd Avenue and resurfacing of the asphaltic pavement within the intersection

Additional right of way or temporary easements will be required for this project. The City of Wausau anticipates the beginning of real estate acquisition in Fall 2022. Coordination will take place with individual property owners.

West Wausau Avenue (Stevens Drive to North 10th Avenue) - Complete Reconstruction
Construction Anticipated 2026
The City of Wausau in cooperation with WisDOT propose to reconstruct West Wausau Avenue. Improvements proposed include:
- 0.3 mile of pavement reconstruction including new curb and gutter.
- Storm sewer modifications, where required, to address drainage.
- Construction of new sidewalk along the south side of the roadway to improve pedestrian access.
- Reconstruction of existing sidewalk and curb ramps to meet ADA standards, where feasible.
- Reconstruction of sanitary sewer and watermain.

Business Campus Trail E/W Connector, 84th Avenue to 72nd Avenue
Construction Anticipated 2026
The City of Wausau is planning a multi-use trail between 84th Avenue and 72nd Avenue. The trail would reduce conflicts between bicycles/pedestrians and vehicle traffic by providing a separate space for them to travel.
