Accessible Metro Ride Buses

Man in a wheelchair approaching the Metro Bus with a rampAll Metro Ride buses are equipped with wheelchair lifts or ramps to provide accessibility for persons with limited mobility. Riders who do not use a wheelchair, but are unable to climb steps, may request to use the lift to board the bus. Each bus has two wheelchair securement locations.

Service Animals

Metro Ride allows service animals on all buses. A service animal, according to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), is an animal individually trained to work or perform tasks for an individual with a disability. A service animal is not one that:

  • Offers emotional support, comfort or well-being;
  • Offers companionship;
  • Deters crime;
  • Begs for attention (typically);
  • Wants to be fed or pet (typically);

Under the ADA, service animals must be harnessed, leashed, or tethered, unless these devices interfere with the service animal’s work or the individual’s disability prevents using these devices. In that case, the individual must maintain control of the animal through voice, signal, or other effective controls.

According to the ADA (49 CFR, Section 37.3), Metro Ride drivers are permitted to ask all customers accompanied by an animal:

  1. Is that a Service Animal? and
  2. What tasks have the animal been trained to perform?

Our drivers may prohibit an animal from riding the bus if it is not a service animal or if the individual fails to maintain control of the animal. For more information on service animals, please contact Metro Ride at 715-842-9287 or metroride@cilwausau.wi.us.

Securement of Mobility Devices

In the interest of passenger safety, it is the policy of Metro Ride to require that all mobility devices for disabled passengers (i.e. wheelchairs, scooters, etc.) be secured to the floor of Metro Ride transit vehicles in designated locations. Metro Ride will deny service to any passenger using a mobility device who declines to permit the vehicle operator to secure their device to the vehicle with the restraints provided. A ride will not be denied in situations where an attempt has been made to secure the mobility device, but the mobility device cannot be secured or restrained satisfactorily by the transit vehicle securement system.
